Post-Fabrication Painting in Darwin
Metal that has just come off the fabricator is not ready for paint, even though it looks clean. Fresh welds, cut edges, mill scale and machining oils all sit on that surface, and any coating applied straight over them will fail early — usually at the welds and edges first, which is exactly where you need it to hold.
Post-fabrication painting is the step that turns new metalwork into a finished, protected component: preparation, the right coating system, and a controlled place to cure it.
Why new metal is harder to paint than old metal
It sounds backwards, but a brand-new fabricated part often needs more preparation than a panel that has been on the road for ten years.
- Weld areas. Welding leaves spatter, discolouration and sometimes slag. Those spots behave differently from the surrounding metal and are the first place coatings lift.
- Cut and sheared edges. Sharp edges hold far less coating thickness than a flat face. Rounding and properly coating edges is what stops rust creeping in from them.
- Mill scale. New hot-rolled steel carries a tight blue-grey layer from the mill. Paint bonds to the scale, not the steel, and when the scale eventually releases, the paint goes with it.
- Oils and marking. Cutting fluid, handling oils, crayon or marker all contaminate a surface that looks clean to the eye.
- Galvanised and alloy surfaces. Both resist ordinary primers. They need a system chosen for that surface, not a general-purpose undercoat.
Why Darwin is harder on coatings
A coating that performs fine in a temperate climate can have a much shorter life here. The Top End combines high UV, heat, humidity, a long wet season and — near the coast — salt in the air. That attacks a coating from two directions at once: UV breaks down the surface, while moisture and salt work at any weak point in the film.
This is why the right preparation and coating system are what support long-term durability — and why we would rather spend the time on preparation than see the job come back.
What the process looks like
For fabricated work, it generally runs like this:
- Assess the substrate. Steel, aluminium and galvanised each need a different approach — this decides everything downstream.
- Clean and degrease. Oils and marking come off before any abrasion, so contamination is not driven into the surface.
- Prepare the surface. Welds dressed, edges attended to, and the surface abraded so the primer has a mechanical key.
- Prime to suit the metal. Alloy work is etch-primed; steel gets a primer suited to its condition and exposure.
- Apply the topcoat in a booth. A controlled booth keeps dust and humidity out of the film and lets the finish cure properly.

What we take on
Fabricated work usually falls into two groups, and they use different pages on our site.
Larger items — frames, trays, tanks, structural work, plant and machinery components — belong with our industrial and fleet work. Smaller bolt-on components, brackets and covers are handled the same way as our parts and components work, where steel and alloy items are stripped, primed and refinished tough.
If you are a fabricator, engineering shop or builder sending work out regularly, the practical question is usually size and volume rather than whether we can do it.
What to send for a quote
To price fabricated work accurately we need:
- What the metal is — steel, aluminium, or galvanised. If you are not certain, say so.
- Overall dimensions and roughly how heavy the item is.
- How many — one-off, or a repeating batch.
- Where it ends up — indoors, outdoors, coastal, or in constant sun.
- The finish you want — a colour, a sheen level, or matched to existing equipment.
- A photo of the item as it stands now, including the welds.
Where the item ends up matters more than people expect: a part living outdoors near the coast is a different job from the same part sitting inside a shed.

FAQ
Can you paint galvanised steel?
Galvanised surfaces need a coating system chosen for that surface — ordinary primer will not hold. Tell us the item is galvanised when you ask, because it changes the approach.
Do you paint aluminium and alloy?
Yes. Alloy is etch-primed before the topcoat, which is what stops the finish lifting later.
Is this the same as painting an existing machine?
No. New metalwork is about getting a first coating system onto a bare surface. An existing, in-service asset carries old coatings, wear and contamination, and is handled differently.
Should the item be painted before or after assembly?
It depends. Coating before assembly reaches surfaces that are impossible to get to later; coating after assembly covers welds made during the build. Ask us before you weld it up and we will tell you which suits your item.
Do you handle repeat batches?
Yes — tell us the volume and how often, and we will quote it as an ongoing arrangement.
